Join us at Degrowth Institute during Chicago Climate Week for a Degrowth Cafe.
332 S Michigan Ave, 4th Floor | 5:30-7:00 PM
Why does the health of our planet continue to worsen despite the work of well-intentioned sustainability efforts? Savings created by technological advancements in efficiency are continually redeployed to serve the need for economic expansion. To meet this challenge, we propose a just, democratic transition to a smaller global economy.
Join Chicago’s own Degrowth Institute (DGI) and Lost The Plot (LTP) for a short presentation and discussion on challenges to economic growth and circularity in our economy. DGI’s Programs Coordinator, Jason Barahona Rosales, will give a short primer on degrowth, which calls for a just transition to a smaller economy. Then Madeleine Sullivan, a Digital Business Analyst at Caterpillar with deep expertise in circular economies, will give a brief history of how we became a single-use, disposable consumer product society, and discuss how our conversations about sustainability rarely attempt to actually challenge underserving status quo systems.
The most interesting Climate Week event you’ll attend! Balance out your networking with some real discussion on what needs to be done to address our climate goals and meet folks working and fighting for real change.
Agenda:
5:15-5:30: Open networking and food/drink
5:30-6:00: Presentations from Jason Barahona Rosales and Madeleine Sullivan
6:00-6:45: Discussion & closing remarks
6:45-7:00: Open networking and food/drink
About the Degrowth Institute
The Degrowth Institute (DGI) is the leading convener of the North American degrowth movement, which challenges the assumption of endless economic growth, recognizing this imperative hinders our progress towards genuine sustainability by undermining ecological gains and perpetuating injustice. DGI contributes to this cause by developing thought leadership and helping facilitate conversation and build movement around degrowth ideas. Learn more at degrowthinstitute.org
